Every place you look in the grocery store there are low fat products available as a healthy alternative to their full fat counterparts. Based on unsound science and convenience (see Wall Street Journal article link below) most people have shifted their eating habits to a low fat high carbohydrate model. Unfortunately, the low fat craze has received overwhelming support from government health agencies, conventional medicine and the food industry. Holistic doctors for years have been promoting the idea that fats (especially healthy ones) are not only safe to consume but beneficial for the body.

The true culprit of obesity and many health issues is too many simple carbohydrates in the diet. A long awaited study published in the September 02, 2014 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine finally puts this debate to rest.

The yearlong study divided people into 2 separate groups. One group ate a low carbohydrate diet, the other ate a low fat diet. After one year the results for weight loss and overall health were overwhelming. The low carbohydrate diet group lost on average 43% more weight than the low fat group. In addition to significantly greater weight loss, the low carb group also experienced many positive health gains in their blood work. The low carbohydrate group experienced a significant decrease in a blood marker called C reactive protein. C reactive protein is a marker of inflammation in the diet and is believed to be a predictor of heart disease. Additionally, the low carbohydrate group saw an improvement in their HDL cholesterol levels, LDL cholesterol levels and triglyceride levels.
